Matt Schlenker

Founder & Lead Instructor, Proactive Training Academy

Matt earned his Bachelor’s Degree from Bemidji State University in 2013 while simultaneously serving as a law enforcement officer, demonstrating an early commitment to both education and public service. He brings more than a decade of experience in law enforcement and emergency medical services, having served as both a Police Officer and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT).

Throughout his career, Matt has held a variety of specialized roles, including Patrol Officer, Special Operations Officer, and School Resource Officer (SRO). His extensive field experience has provided him with a well-rounded understanding of public safety, crisis management, and community engagement.

Ben Johnson

Instructor

Ben has dedicated over 26 years to serving as a law enforcement officer with a prominent metropolitan agency. His commitment to excellence is reflected in his long-standing role as a certified Use of Force and Firearms Instructor, accredited through the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension since 1998.

Ben is highly experienced across a wide range of firearm platforms and holds armorer certifications for:

  • Glock

  • MP5

  • Remington 700 and 870

  • Mossberg 500

Cody Wistrom. Instructor. Proactive Training Academy.

Cody Wistrom

Instructor

Cody was born and raised in western Wisconsin, where he developed a lifelong passion for hunting, fishing, and spending time outdoors.

After high school, Cody proudly served in the United States Marine Corps as an Ammunition and Ordnance Chief with Rocket Artillery. His military service took him to every corner of the country, providing valuable leadership experience and a deep appreciation for responsibility, safety, and preparedness.

Dave Kisch. Instructor. Proactive Training Academy.

Dave Kisch

Instructor

Dave grew up near Stillwater, Minnesota, and proudly served a career in law enforcement before retiring.

With a lifelong passion for the outdoors, Dave enjoys hunting, fishing, and a variety of outdoor sports. His experience, combined with his commitment to firearm safety and responsible ownership, makes him a valuable asset to both new and experienced shooters.

Andy Timmer

Instructor

Andy has over 20 years of experience in the firearms industry and has held certifications through the National Muzzleloading Rifle Association. He also previously served as a Minnesota DNR Firearm Safety Instructor.

As an instructor, Andy is passionate about sharing his love for shooting sports while creating a safe, welcoming, and comfortable learning environment for students of all backgrounds and experience levels.

Ryan Dougherty. Instructor. Proactive Training Academy.

Ryan Dougherty

Instructor

Ryan brings over 22 years of experience in Emergency Medical Services (EMS), including 18 years as a paramedic in a high-volume 911 system. He also served for three years as a paramedic on the Anoka County SWAT Team, providing critical medical support in high-risk environments.

In 2021, Ryan graduated from the Tactical EMS School at the Camp Ripley State Training Facility, further advancing his expertise in tactical and emergency response care. His background includes extensive training in prehospital emergency medicine, basic and advanced life support, and trauma care.
